On February 24, 2016, the FAA announced the formation of an Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC) to explore the problems associated with flying UAS over people. In the announcement, the FAA stated that it intends to move beyond the original Micro UAS proposal and approach the problem from an entirely new “performance-based” perspective. The FAA believes that this approach will ultimately be more flexible and will allow faster integration of new technology into the regulatory system.

The ARC is currently meeting, and is expected to issue its report on April 1, 2015. This report will have a dramatic impact on the direction of future FAA’s regulatory efforts and will shape UAS operations for years to come.

In this webinar, one of the continuing series we have had on UAS, we will discuss:

  • What is the Aviation Rulemaking Committee and how will it affect future rulemaking?
  • What impact will the ARC Report have on the Small UAS Rule and the original Micro UAS proposal?
  • What are the findings of the ARC and how will it impact current operators?
  • What is a congested area and what is the future for congested-area operations?
  • What is a performance-based approach to regulation and how does it differ from other types of regulation?
  • How does this new approach compare with the Canadian risk-based approach?
  • How does this new approach compare with the EASA proposal?
  • Will there be a new rulemaking and what is the timeline for a final proposal?
